Liquor Review Category: Single Malt Scotch
Producer: The Glenlivet Distillery
The Glenlivet Distillery (note the use of the indefinite article “the” allowed by court decree in 1884) is the top-selling single malt scotch in the world. It is often considered the classic Speyside, producing unpeated (that is, non-smoky) scotch whisky. The name translates as “valley of the smooth flowing one.” They are proud of their mineral rich water from “Josie’s well” and their tall copper stills, producing lighter vapors for smoother, more buoyant whisky.
The Glenlivet 12yr single malt scotch is the youngest expression and the flagship bottle of the distillery known the world over. When people say “Glenlivet,” they usually mean this bottle. Based largely upon the 12yr, it is the second-highest seller globally in the single-malt category and the largest in the US. It is unpeated and considered accessible for the new scotch drinker. In our own guided tasting, they suggest adding a tiny bit of water to soften the flavor and balance the alcohol. One should taste fruity, floral, honey, and vanilla notes in the whisky.
